The 90s Was a Time, and No One Knows That Better than the Ford Mustang
Undeniably, the Ford Mustang owes much of its success to the unwavering support of its fans. Throughout the years, these dedicated enthusiasts have played a crucial role in preserving the Mustang’s legacy and helping it evolve into the iconic car it is today. While some might dismiss this as a cliché, the truth is that without the passion and commitment of Mustang fans, the sports car may not have survived some of its most challenging moments. From the classic models of the past to modern incarnations, the Ford Mustang has always had a devoted following that has helped it flourish. Nothing is more critical to the Mustang story than the fans who have kept it alive and thriving beyond generations.
In 1990, Berlin finally came back together after a long period of division. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Soviet citizens were restlessly queuing up for the communist bloc’s very first Big Macs. Over in America, Vanilla Ice cruised around in his white-on-white “5.0” Mustang, spitting rhymes over Queen and David Bowie’s classic hit “Under Pressure.” The Mustang was still popular, but sales weren’t ‘cooking like a pound of bacon,’ as Ice rapped in his famous single. The Fox-platform Mustang, which had been around since 1979, was losing steam and had seen a decline in sales since 1986. In two years, sales would flatline at 79,280 units sold. To make matters worse, the Chevrolet Camaro was about to outsell the Mustang for the first time in six years—a tough pill to swallow for the Blue Stable.
Ford and Mazda had a controversial partnership in the Summer of 1986. The collaboration co-developed the next-generation Mustang. This new Mustang was set to launch in 1989 and would have traded in its classic pushrod 4.9-liter V-8 engine and rear-drive platform for the Mazda 626’s front-drive architecture and I-4 and V-6 engines. However, this union faced outrage from Mustang fans and Ford dealers alike—happy pride month to those that relate to Ford and Mazda.
“As much as I try to rationalize the whole deal. I just can’t force myself to accept Ford’s intended future for the Mustang. Call me old-fashioned or sentimental or just plain stubborn, but a Japanese car, even one built in America, is a Japanese car, and I’m not prepared to see a Mazda with the Mustang name and running-horse emblems affixed to its fenders. After the Mustang has clawed its way to the top of the pony car heap once again, Ford plans to turn it into a front-wheel-drive copy of a Japanese car. Subsequently, Ford released a written letter, and the automaker cracked under pressure. The following Summer, the American automaker announced that the Mazda-based sports car would be known as the Probe.
Unfortunately, one question remained unanswered, what will the Blue Oval do with the Mustang? The aging Fox platform has undergone significant modifications to make it a more comfortable ride than the previous third-gen model. However, the upcoming Mustang won’t feature Ford’s new modular V-8s, which debuted on the 1991 Lincoln Town Car at launch. Instead, it relied on the 4.9-liter V-8 with a minor power increase from 205 to 215 hp for a few more years. The base Ford Mustang, the Taurus, rendered 145 hp through a 3.8-liter V-6, an additional 40 hp compared to the old 2.3-liter I-4 it replaced. Drivers could use a carryover five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
The SN95 Mustang had three focus-tested designs among the Mustang faithful, but the only question remaining was what the exterior would look like. The first effort, “The Bruce Jenner,” was deemed too modernistic and Probe-like, while the second effort, “the Rambo,” went to the opposite extreme with stealth-inspired surfaces, edges, and chimes that would make even Elon Musk turn away. The third effort, however, blended the two earlier efforts and reportedly had Mustang fans standing up and bursting into applause when revealed. With a few final revisions and flourishes, it became the 1994 Ford Mustang.
In 1996, the Blue Oval finally decided to embrace technological advancements and introduced its new “modular” V-8s to the Mustang. The engines were known for their ability to be scaled up or down based on the vehicle, which was a significant improvement. The new 4.6-liter overhead-cam V-8s initially maintained the Mustang GT’s output at 215 hp and 285 lb-ft, but those figures eventually increased to 260 hp and 302 lb-ft by the time the famous “New Edge” face-lift arrived in 1999. Proving a crucial moment in the Mustang’s history, it ensured that the vehicle remained relevant and competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
Mustang sales skyrocketed right after the New Edge face-lift and new engines were introduced. On the other hand, it’s unfortunate that Camaro sales dwindled, and Chevrolet ultimately discontinued the model after 2002.
Fast-forward to Detroit, 2023, where there’s a 1993 Fox Body Mustang Cobra, an SN95 1996 Mustang GT convertible, and a brand-new seventh-generation S650 2024 Mustang Dark Horse—the first new Mustang trim since 2001’s Bullitt. Despite the generational gaps separating them all, it’s fascinating to see how many of the same philosophies first set out during the Fox Body-SN95 transition are still playing out today. The passion for the Mustang brand and the love for the car’s unique style and performance remains strong, regardless of the era. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of this iconic American muscle car.
