The Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear Breezes through Off-Road Terrains
Ford Pro recently unveiled the F-150 Lightning Switchgear, an electric powerhouse with 37-inch tires for exceptional on- and off-road performance. The Ford demonstrator vehicle is a testament to the success of America’s best-selling electric truck resulting from a collaborative effort with RTR (Ready-to-Rock) Vehicles. Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle of 2016, Switchgear showcases a bespoke exterior with carbon bodywork adorned by a Ford Performance 2024 livery.
Innovatively designed to explore uncharted territories, the Switchgear is part of our Ford Performance Demonstrator program, joining the ranks of SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, Mustang CobraJet 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator. The switchgear program serves as a platform to demonstrate the diverse potential of electric vehicles, providing an experimental space for engineers to advance their insights for future electric vehicle developments rapidly.
Switchgear serves as a testing ground for pushing the limits of electric trucks. Noteworthy enhancements include a significantly increased track width for off-road stability beyond the F-150 Lightning and improved ground clearance and suspension travel. To tackle rough terrain, the Switchgear boasts a specialized suspension system featuring FOX 3-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers and distinctive front and rear bumpers to enhance approach and departure angles.
This high-performance truck features custom independent double-wishbone suspension at the front and multilink independent suspension at the rear, complete with coil-over shocks, a stabilizer bar, and custom control arms. Additional rugged features include carbon composite front fenders, bedsides, rear bumper cover, steel fabricated rock rails, and a front skid plate to navigate challenging off-road landscapes. Limit straps manage suspension and wheel travel, while NITTO Ridge Grappler 37×12.5R18 tires provide exceptional traction. The Switchgear has a distinctive chase rack housing two spare wheels/tires.
