Ford’s Shift to Affordable Compact EVs

Overseas, the demand for compact EVs is soaring, presenting a stark contrast to the dominance of massive electric vehicles like the Ford F-150 Lightning and a plethora of electric SUVs in the U.S. Nevertheless, the small EV sector is gaining traction stateside, and Ford is seizing the opportunity to join the fray

During an earnings call in early February (2024), Ford CEO Jim Farley unveiled the company’s shift towards smaller and more affordable electric vehicles. Farley disclosed that two years ago, an undercover team, acting as a startup within Ford, initiated work on a low-cost EV to better compete with electric vehicles from Chinese automakers.

Recent reports shed light on the expected affordability of Ford’s upcoming EVs. Bloomberg Businessweek revealed that the first model will debut in late 2026 at approximately $25,000. In contrast, the F-150 Lightning starts at $54,995* (excludes taxes and destination fees), while Ford’s electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E, begins at around $43,000.

Ford’s endeavor into compact EVs is spearheaded by a specialized team based in Irvine, California, consisting of fewer than 100 individuals. Alan Clarke, who previously spent 12 years at Tesla leading the engineering of the Model Y, heads this team. Clarke made the move to Ford in 2022. These compact EVs will feature a lithium iron phosphate battery, offering a cost reduction of about 30% compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Ford continues to explore even more cost-effective battery technologies.

During the February (2024) analyst call, Farley emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to cost efficiency across its EV product line, citing competition from affordable Tesla models and Chinese OEMs. Tesla is also developing a cheaper EV model that is expected to hit the market at a similar price point of $25,000. CEO Elon Musk initially mentioned this goal in 2020, with plans now set for the cheaper model to launch in 2025.
