Ford Launches Mass Production of All-Electric Explorer in Cologne Facility

Get ready to explore a new era as Ford commences mass production of the all-electric Explorer at its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) facility in Europe. Production of the EV supports a monumental $2 billion transformation of the historic plant into a cutting-edge factory of the future.
The all-electric Explorer is the pioneering model rolling off the line at the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, marking a significant milestone in creating a new generation of high-quality electric passenger vehicles for Europe. Excitement builds as a second EV, a sleek sports crossover, is set to be unveiled soon, with production in Cologne starting later this year (2024).
The new all-electric Explorer is a stunning fusion of German engineering and American flair. It features top-notch specifications, including battery electric powertrains for zero tailpipe emissions and an impressive range of over 600 km (372 miles) on a single charge.
The Factory of the Future
The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center is a marvel of modern technology, equipped with cutting-edge AI and a symphony of hundreds of meticulously choreographed state-of-the-art robots that will produce a new generation of high-quality EVs for Ford customers in Europe. The plant’s “digital twin” monitors and supports production line operators to ensure top-tier quality standards.
This state-of-the-art facility boasts self-learning machines and more than 600 advanced robots performing tasks such as welding, cutting, dusting, painting, and fusing in a complex ballet to achieve unparalleled precision, efficiency, and quality.
A new control center oversees the entire assembly process in real-time, down to the quantity of every part and nut at each workstation. The plant’s “digital twin” is showcased on a giant touchscreen, providing comprehensive information on tooling, material delivery, work safety, and more. Small touchscreens at each workstation allow employees to provide additional information on the status of their tasks.
Pioneering Sustainable Production
The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center is one of Ford’s most efficient vehicle assembly plants globally, with significantly reduced emissions, water usage, and energy consumption.
Ford is committed to a carbon neutrality pathway for the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center. With production for the Magic Pony underway, the automaker will gather information on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and independently certify according to the latest international standards. Ford will continuously enhance carbon efficiency and reduce GHG emissions towards a minimal residual level as part of this carbon neutrality journey.
Additionally, the facility’s operations are powered entirely by certified renewable electricity and biomethane. Ford Motor Company is ambitiously targeting carbon neutrality across its European production facilities, logistics, and direct suppliers by 2035.
With the all-electric Ford Explorer paving the way, Ford’s future in Europe looks electrifying!
