What Ford’s Accomplished 

Ford will premiere its self-driving car in Miami through Lyft’s services later this year. Ford and Lyft partnered with its autonomous driving partners Argo AI. Vehicles will come equipped with Argo’s self-driving technology, but a person behind the wheel will be there for added safety measures. 

“Going from the testing phase to a commercial service while still using safety operators behind the wheel is a big step. But to go from there to offering driverless vehicles is an even bigger step. It requires validating that the technology is achieving a level of self-driving performance deemed safer than what we see on the streets today.” – Argo AI Chief Executive Bryan Salesky. 

What’s in Progress

The trio intends to release the next set of self-driving vehicles in Austin, Texas, by 2022. After that, there’s an expectation for 1,000 cars in multiple cities within the next five years.

Ford and Volkswagen both possess 40 percent of the intelligence company Argo. As a result, the conjunction leaves Lyft with a 2.5 percent equity takeaway. Additionally, this partnership allows Lyft to collect and share data about ride-sharing operations with Ford and Argo. 

The Failures
