Going Green with the Ford Explorer EV

Ford, the American multinational automaker, has recently made an announcement regarding its popular SUV, the Explorer. According to Ford, the new Explorer will undergo a complete redesign and is expected to debut sometime in the next year(2024). The upcoming Explorer will include an electric powertrain option, which will be a welcome addition for those seeking a more eco-friendly driving experience. This move towards electrification reflects Ford’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The new Explorer is also expected to come with several advanced features, including state-of-the-art safety systems, advanced driver assistance technologies, and a modern infotainment system.

The Explorer EV sets itself apart from the regular Explorer as it is built on an EV platform borrowed from Volkswagen while still sharing some of the Explorer’s qualities. Ford’s plans for the Explorer EV’s availability in the U.S. market remain unclear. The European model is expected to be priced at around $48,000 (plus destination fee) and will be offered in two trims – Explorer and Explorer Premium. Despite being built on Volkswagen’s BEV platform, Ford has managed to differentiate the Explorer EV through its exterior styling. The nose of the vehicle, which lacks a traditional grille, takes inspiration from the Mustang Mach-E, while the bar with the “Explorer” name across the front serves as a visual identifier. The EV also features blacked-out A-pillars and rear pillars to create a “floating roof” effect, which is further accentuated by the kicked-up beltline, giving it a sportier appearance than the regular Explorer.
The Explorer EV is a spacious and stylish five-passenger vehicle with a futuristic interior design. The rear bench stands out with its modern and sleek aesthetic, while the Soundbar adds to the vehicle’s impressive features with its floating speaker and LED strip at the dashboard’s top. Additionally, the Explorer EV is equipped with a state-of-the-art stereo system, wireless device charging, and seamless integration with mobile apps. The cabin is designed for comfort, with sport front seats, heated and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and multi-zone automatic climate control. With Ford’s connected app, the Explorer EV can even be pre-warmed prior to arrival. The infotainment system is equally impressive, featuring the SYNC Move setup as standard on all Explorer EVs. The 15-inch touchscreen is adjustable for optimal viewing comfort and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers easy control of other vehicle systems and menus.
Ford has not provided any details yet on the battery, motors, output, or range of the upcoming Explorer EV. The company has confirmed that it will be available in both rear-wheel-drive (single-motor) and all-wheel-drive (dual-motor) configurations. Since this mid-size electric SUV is based on a Volkswagen platform, it’s possible that it could share similarities with the VW ID.4, which offers battery packs rated at 58-kWh and 77-kWh. Assuming this is the case, the Explorer EV may produce 200 horsepower in RWD form and 300 horsepower in AWD form. Ford has said that the official driving range will be announced closer to the on-sale date. Thanks to DC fast charging, the Explorer EV’s battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 25 minutes.
