Ford Teases Next-Generation 2022 Ranger
The next-generation 2022 Ford Ranger is on its way. Ford has teased the new Ranger as a bold and rugged pickup that takes a little from others like the Maverick and builds upon it. The mid-sized pickup receives a series of improvements to its exterior and interior and it also gets a small bump in size. Ford will be adding new styling as well as a new powertrain to the 2022 Ranger. We’ll dive into the changes to the next-generation Ranger but from what we’ve learned so far, it looks promising.
The 2022 Ford Ranger is on its Way
The 2022 Ford Ranger looks bold and rugged. The next-generation Ranger to be released from Ford will feature a borrowed design from the Maverick but it will make use of a new version of Ford’s global T6 platform. This platform will be designed and engineered by Ford’s Product Development Center in Australia. The next-generation Ranger will come available with different diesel options varying by region. These will include a single or bi-turbo 2.0L inline four-cylinder. There will also be a 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel option. The single-turbo will come with two different performance levels whereas the bi-turbo will be a performance variant. Those consumers wanting a better blend of performance and fuel economy may opt for this choice. Ford has also stated that the 2022 Ranger will feature either a full-time four-wheel-drive system or a shift-on-the fly-system.
Ford has yet to confirm which engine options will be used for the 2022 Ford Ranger in the United States, but it’s a good guess that the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder will get carried over. If the Ranger does get a new engine then the pickup’s hydroformed front end structure will provide more space in the engine bay. This will allow more airflow to reach the radiator which will help keep temperatures low when towing or carrying loads. A diesel V6 would be a treat given this modification. Currently, the 2.3L engine gets 270 horsepower and 310lb-ft of torque. The V6 however would get 250 horsepower and 440lb-ft of torque. This would definitely give the Ranger a bit more edge but we’ll have to wait and see what Ford decides.
Exterior and Interior of the 2022 Ranger
The next-generation 2022 Ranger looks to feature the Maverick’s C-shaped headlight structure as well as the grille shape and center bar. The pickup keeps its body-on-frame construction, but where the new Ranger improves, however, is with its wheelbase and track, both of which have grown by 2 inches. This additional length provides more leeway to widen the truck bed so that owners have more room to lay various styles of 4×8 sheet goods. The 2022 Ranger does keep the current model’s front coil and rear leaf spring setup, but its rear dampers have been moved outside the frame rails. These changes will help improve the ride quality as well as the handling.
Inside the 2022 Ranger, owners will note a modern overhaul of technology including a new 10.1-inch touchscreen. A 12-inch screen is also available. Owners can make use of Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Some controls that used to be used for off-road systems are now accessed via touchscreen, making things more accessible. A dedicated screen now provides accurate monitoring of driveline, steering angle, vehicle pitch, and roll angles. There’s also more room in the rear passenger seats due to the extra 2-inches of track width.
Ford will be opening orders for the 2022 Ford Ranger in late 2022 with delivery in early 2023. Ford will be offering the next-generation in Europe initially, but the U.S version will be available in 2022. Pricing hasn’t been announced either but we will keep our ears tuned.
