Ford Mustang Mach-E Will Receive New Battery Tech

Ford recently announced that its newest battery plant would start producing new battery cells for its EV lineup after 2026. So far, the Blue Oval has made two electric vehicles, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Both EVs have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from consumers as they offer high capability and versatility. Ford is reportedly working on new EVs like the Ford Ranger Lightning, but for now, the Blue Oval will boost its two current EVs. Currently, the Mach-E and Lightning use nickel manganese cobalt battery cells but will soon receive lithium iron phosphate cells. We’ll examine the difference between these battery cells and see what consumers can expect.
Ford To Introduce New Battery Cells For EV Lineup
Ford recently announced that its newest battery plant would work on new battery cells for its electric vehicle lineup. The plant will aim to produce new battery cells called lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Currently, Ford uses nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery cells incorporated into the Blue Oval’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. The difference between LFP and NMC cells is in their strength and durability. According to Ford, the Mustang Mach-E will be the first EV to receive the new LFP cells. It will receive them by the end of 2023. The F-150 Lightning will receive the new LFP cells by the end of 2024.
The difference between LFP and NMC battery cells is that LFP cells are more durable and can handle more charge cycles. They can also accept consistent fast charging better than NMC cells. This means they are better designed for daily commuting and commercial vehicles. Ford plans to utilize both the new LFP and its current NMC cells. The goal will be to offer them different trims. Trims prioritizing longer-range and higher performance will use NMC cells as they are better suited for performance and towing.
Consumers can expect higher trims like the Mustang Mach-E GT to use NMC battery cells. The base Mach-E will instead use LFP cells. Consumers cannot choose between different battery packs on the exact trim, so they will have to consider which trim best suits their needs. Ford plans to finish its Michigan battery plant in 2026, so the new LFP battery cells will come from the Chinese battery plant CATL. Once the Michigan plant is completed, however, Ford will license the battery technology and manufacture the new LFP cells in the United States.
