Ford Mustang Mach-E Passes Intense Torture Tests

Ford has been making headlines with its all-new all-electric Mustang Mach-E. The fully electric crossover SUV comes as a first for Ford and with its Mustang forename, Ford had to make sure the new electric vehicle could uphold certain standards. Although the electric SUV has earned some recognition already, as evidenced by its 2021 EV of the Year Award, Ford wanted to ensure the Mustang Mach-E could serve consumers as both a durable and efficient vehicle. To guarantee this, Ford made sure to torture test the electric SUV. Part of this torture test included a litany of tests and experiments to determine just how durable the new electric crossover SUV is.

Testing the Mach-E’s Exterior

One of the first tests Ford put the Mustang Mach-E through was one that would measure its exterior durability. Ford decided to test the SUV’s exterior by putting it up against the abuse of rocks, dirt, and grime. To do this, Mach-E testers drove the crossover SUV down a miles-long path at 60 miles per hour taking it through different grades of stone. Ford said that it repeated this process nearly 200 times in order to make sure the Mustang Mach-E’s paint and finish didn’t end up too damaged. At the end of the first experiment, the Ford Mustang Mach-E managed to travel a total distance of almost 300 miles. The paint of the electric SUV was surprisingly none too worse for wear despite the grueling test.

The second test for the Mustang Mach-E once again focused on exterior durability. Only this time, Ford wanted to simulate the worst of weather conditions as well as put some fears about electric vehicles to rest. According to a study cited by Ford, almost 27% of Americans were unsure if electric cars could drive in the rain, hence the weather test. So, Ford decided to take the electric SUV through one of the toughest simulations: the car wash.

Ford put the Mach-E through an automated car wash 60 times, quite enough to simulate a heavy washing nearly once a week for two years. The car wash featured heavy-duty brushes, which meant that the SUV’s paint faced debris and high-powered sprayers. In addition to this repeated wash, Ford also sent out its engineers to pressure wash the door seals, badges, headlights, and adhesives of the crossover SUV. These parts were blasted with 140-degree water from about a foot away. Even with 1,700 psi of pressure, the Mustang Mach-E never short-circuited.

Testing the Mach-E’s Interior

For the third test, Ford wanted to measure the durability of the Mustang Mach-E’s interior. A strongly built vehicle requires both interior and exterior durability, especially one leading the next generation of electric vehicles. To ensure that the crossover SUV had long-lasting and durable seats, Ford used its robot dummies to test the equivalent of 25,000 entry and exit motions. Flexibility was also assessed by simulating movements in the seat material over 100,000 times. Additional tests were performed to gauge how resistant the seats were against abrasive and chemical materials.

A final test for Ford’s Mustang Mach-E involved the 15.5-inch display. Since almost all of the crossover SUV’s functions can be used and controlled with the tablet-like screen, it is very important that it is resistant and durable. To determine the durability of the screen, Ford tested several different methods of smashing the screen including hitting with it a hammer and throwing metal objects at it. This combination of high-performance tests speaks to Ford’s vision and vehicle standards. Offering vehicles that are Built Ford Tough requires a lot of tests and the best of materials. For Ford’s first all-electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E is looking to be a top contender that will pave the way for other electric vehicles.
