An Introduction to Ford’s Co-Pilot360

Driver-assist features are of another level, and they continuously evolve every single day. Just take a look at Ford’s Co-Pilot360. The driver-assist component consists of a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. The Co-Pilot also includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep-assist, and the federally required backup camera. The features accessibility varies by model, but the fleet of driver-assist features are available throughout the mighty Ford lineup. 

The Co-Pilot360 made its debut in 2019 on the Edge SUV. Since the Co-Pilot’s debut, it was only available on every Ford vehicle except the heavy-duty pickup trucks. But here’s where things get interesting.  

New additions and subtractions since the debut of the Co-Pilot, but the most recent update is BlueCruise. BlueCruise offers a hands-free highway driving experience for the F-150 and the Mustang Mach-E. 

BlueCruise will partner with Ford’s intelligent adaptive cruise control, integrating lane centering and speed sign recognition. The previously named Active Drive Assist allows drivers to be hands-free on a specified highway divided within the US and Canada. In addition, there’s an infrared camera that observes the driver’s eyes and head position, instilling that the driver pays attention to the road and providing a warning when the driver isn’t paying attention. 

The F-150 Limited and the Mach-E California Route 1 come equipped with the Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 Prep Package. But the Premium and First Edition of Co-Pilot are optional on other models. Pricing for the Prep package hardware ranges from $1,595 to $3,200, but that’s dependent on the model and its other features. 

There is software to operate the system, and it will cost an extra $600. However, it will provide three years of service and over-the-air updates. Once the BlueCruise software becomes available for existing vehicles, Ford will begin installing BlueCruise on the F-150 and Mach-Es. This over-the-air update and installation should happen sometime between late summer and early fall. 

Ford will join Tesla and GM’s Cadillac with BlueCruise providing Level 2 driver assist technology. These vehicles can drive themselves, but a driver can take over the wheel at any given time. Ford intends to have BlueCruise available on every single model, but so far, Ford has not disclosed which vehicles and a timeframe.
